Jaltest vs TEXA vs Bosch ESI: Complete Comparison
If you are shopping for a professional diesel diagnostic tool, three names keep coming up: Jaltest, TEXA, and Bosch ESI[tronic]. Each has a loyal user base. Each has real strengths. But they are not equal, and the differences matter when you are writing a five-figure check for your shop.
We have sold and supported Jaltest since 2016. We have also fielded calls from techs who own TEXA and Bosch units and want to switch. So we know all three platforms well. This comparison is based on real-world use, not marketing brochures.

Now let us dig into each category.
Manufacturer and Model Coverage
This is where the conversation starts and often ends. Coverage is the single most important factor for a working shop. A beautiful user interface does not matter if the tool cannot talk to the truck in your bay.
Jaltest covers 241 manufacturers and over 6,750 models. That is not just major Class 8 OEMs like Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Volvo. It includes medium-duty brands like Hino, Isuzu, and Mitsubishi Fuso. It covers buses, agricultural equipment from John Deere and Case IH, marine engines from Cummins and Caterpillar, and construction equipment from CAT, Komatsu, and JCB. One license, one tool, all sectors.
TEXA covers over 150 manufacturers and around 4,000 models. That is solid coverage for a truck-focused shop, and TEXA has particularly strong European brand support for Scania, DAF, and MAN. However, reaching into ag, marine, and construction requires separate software modules, each with their own license cost.
Bosch ESI covers approximately 120 manufacturers and 3,500 models. Bosch has deep roots in European vehicle systems and strong coverage for engines they manufacture components for. But the overall breadth is narrower, and coverage for niche or specialty manufacturers can be thin.
What This Means in Your Bay
If your shop only works on Freightliner, Peterbilt, and Kenworth, all three tools will serve you. The difference shows up when a customer tows in a 2019 Autocar ACX, a Capacity terminal tractor, or an Oshkosh refuse truck. Jaltest covers them. The other two may not.
Diagnostic Depth
All three platforms read and clear fault codes. All three offer live data streaming. The separation happens in advanced functions.
Bi-Directional Controls
Jaltest and TEXA both offer strong bi-directional control — commanding EGR valves, injectors, fans, and other actuators on and off to verify operation. Bosch ESI has bi-directional capability on supported models but the depth is not as consistent across all brands.
Calibrations and Programming
Jaltest provides injector calibration, turbo actuator calibration, aftertreatment component replacement procedures, and parameter programming across its full coverage range. TEXA offers similar calibration capabilities on its supported brands. Bosch ESI has more limited calibration support, particularly for non-European brands.
Guided Troubleshooting
Jaltest includes step-by-step guided troubleshooting tied to specific fault codes. The software walks you through diagnostic checks in a logical sequence, reducing guesswork. TEXA has troubleshooting support but it varies by brand. Bosch ESI relies more on the technician having existing knowledge of the system.
DPF and SCR Diagnostics
Aftertreatment work is a major revenue driver for diesel shops. DPF regeneration alone accounts for hundreds of service visits per year in a busy operation. Your diagnostic tool needs to handle this completely.
Jaltest provides full aftertreatment diagnostics: forced DPF regeneration across all supported brands, real-time soot level monitoring, DPF differential pressure readings, DEF quality verification, SCR efficiency monitoring, and aftertreatment component replacement procedures. When a truck comes in with a derate for high soot loading, you can diagnose the root cause, perform the regen, and verify the repair — all from one tool.
TEXA handles DPF regeneration and soot monitoring well on its supported brands. It is a capable aftertreatment diagnostic tool. The limitation is that its brand coverage is narrower, so you may not have forced regen capability on every truck that rolls in.
Bosch ESI has limited DPF support. Basic regeneration is available on some models, but the coverage is not as comprehensive. If aftertreatment work is a significant part of your business, ESI alone may not be sufficient.
Wiring Diagrams
A wiring diagram turns a two-hour diagnostic session into a 30-minute job. When you are tracing a sensor circuit or chasing an intermittent CAN bus fault, you need the schematic on screen immediately — not buried in a separate service manual subscription.
Jaltest includes wiring diagrams with the software at no additional cost. They are integrated into the diagnostic workflow and linked to the specific vehicle and system you are working on.
TEXA offers wiring diagrams as an add-on module at extra cost. The diagrams are good when you have them, but the additional expense adds to an already higher entry price.
Bosch ESI includes wiring diagrams with the software. This is one of Bosch ESI's genuine strengths — they have a long history of technical documentation and their wiring data is solid for supported vehicles.
Technical Support
Support separates a tool purchase from a tool partnership. When you are stuck on a diagnostic procedure, the quality of your vendor's support team directly impacts your shop's productivity and revenue.
When you buy Jaltest from us, you get live phone support. Call 800-217-0063 and talk to someone who knows the software and knows diesel diagnostics. We have been supporting Jaltest users since 2016. Our techs do not read from scripts — they troubleshoot with you.
TEXA offers support, but availability can be limited depending on your region and dealer. Response times vary. Some TEXA dealers provide excellent support; others route you through layers of email tickets.
Bosch ESI does not offer live phone support as a standard feature. Support is generally handled through dealer channels and online resources. For a technician who needs an answer now, this can be a significant limitation.
Software Updates and Ongoing Costs
The purchase price is just the starting point. What matters is total cost of ownership over three to five years.
Jaltest releases multiple software updates per year. New vehicle coverage, new features, and new diagnostic capabilities come with each release. Updates are included with the annual subscription. Starting at approximately $4,000 for the initial purchase, Jaltest has the lowest entry point of the three.
TEXA starts at approximately $6,000. Software updates are delivered regularly and require an annual subscription renewal. The add-on modules for wiring diagrams and additional sectors increase the total investment.
Bosch ESI starts at approximately $5,000. Updates are periodic and tied to an annual subscription. The update frequency has historically been slower than Jaltest or TEXA.
Multi-Sector Versatility
If your shop only works on Class 8 highway trucks, single-sector coverage is fine. But many shops are diversifying — taking on bus fleets, agricultural equipment, construction machines, or marine engines to grow revenue.
Jaltest covers trucks, buses, trailers, light commercial vehicles, agricultural equipment, construction and off-highway equipment, marine engines, material handling equipment, and stationary engines — all under one license. One tool, one subscription, all sectors.
TEXA can cover multiple sectors, but each sector typically requires a separate license purchase. A TEXA setup covering trucks plus ag plus marine costs significantly more than the base price.
Bosch ESI is primarily focused on trucks and commercial vehicles. Coverage for agricultural, marine, and construction equipment is limited or unavailable.
So Which One Should You Buy?
Each tool has legitimate strengths. TEXA has excellent European coverage and a strong interface. Bosch ESI has solid wiring data and deep Bosch component expertise. Neither is a bad tool.
But for most North American diesel shops, Jaltest wins the comparison. It offers the broadest manufacturer coverage at the lowest entry price, with full aftertreatment diagnostics, included wiring diagrams, multi-sector versatility, and live technical support. You get more capability for less money, backed by a team that actually picks up the phone.
